Could
you tell me what the term "gemstone" means?
There is no generally accepted definition for the term gem or gemstone.
Most often a classification divided them between two groups: precious
and semi-precious stones. Precious gemstones are diamond, emerald,
ruby, sapphire, and precious opal. The rest of the natural stones consider to be
semi-precious. However, in now days, the term semi-precious generally
fallen out of use because of it depreciatory meaning.
What
is the difference between imitation and synthetic stone?
Imitations are made to replicate the look, color and effect of
particular natural stone but they do not possess neither chemical nor
physical characteristics of the natural stone they imitate. For make
imitations could be used natural (usually low quality) stones or
synthetics. Synthetic stones are man-made, sometimes they are called
lab created stones. These stones, for the most part, possess physical
and chemical properties of their natural stone counterparts.
What
should I know about gold and silver?
Pure gold and silver are 100% of the precious metal but in jewelry
making they're used as alloys (for the most of the time). Pure (or
fine) gold is 24 karat (or 24K) gold. Gold that is less than 24K is an
alloy with silver and copper (mostly). For instance, in 14K gold is
58.5% of pure gold and the rest are silver and copper; 16K is 66.6%
gold, 18K is 75% gold, 20% is 83.3% gold, 22K is 91.6% gold. Silver
also has a different grades of purity. The purest silver (fine silver)
is 99.9% silver. Sterling silver is also an alloy of 92.5% of silver
(the other part is mostly copper). There is a new silver on the market
- tarnish resistant Argentium Sterling, which has geranium in it.
What
quality of material are used for making your jewelry?
We pay a special attention for the quality of material we use. It is
mostly natural gems and organic material (wood, shell, coral, pearl).
Some of them are treated (as most gems and pearls sold in department
stores) and the other ones are not. It would be wrong to say that we
use the best what is on the market. We can't. For instance, in 2008
annual Tucson Gem & Jewelry Show asking price for one raw
string (not yet a jewelry) of the best quality cultured freshwater
pearls was 15,000.00 USD. Way too much to afford for our customers.
However, we are trying our best to make our jewelry with a good, fair
quality material we can get and yet you‘ll be able to afford.
