Jet, like diamond, made mostly of carbon. This is the only similarity they have. Unlike diamond, jet is black and opaque, while diamond is clear and sparkling. Another big thing about jet – it is organic. Mother-Nature, by long biological process, was slowly transforming prehistoric pine trees into this solid gemstone. Simply, jet is a type of very dark brown coal, a focalized wood of dead trees which had being flourished on Earth 180 million years ago.

In early Catholic Church jet was popular material for crosses and rosaries. People believed that prayers recited over these rosaries were powerful remedy against bad dreams, hallucinations and highly effective in protection against dark spirit of devil and his black angels.

Jet jewelry became extremely popular in the late 19th beginning of 20th century, after the long forty years of morning of the Queen Victoria of England. As result of this sad event, jet gained popularity for morning jewelry and was accepted as the “jewel of widows.”

Jet also had some practical use – in Italy, India and Egypt people was wearing jet to protect against evil eye, drive away snakes and demons, guard from thunderstorms and ensure the safety of absent loved ones.

Properties

It is said that jet helps the wearers to be aware to all things which coming to their life and act swiftly with constructive solutions.

This is a good stone to drive out negative energy, fight depression, and guard against nightmares and free-floating anxiety. Jet is very protective stone especially in case of divorce in a family.

It is believed to be a good aid to take practical steps to overcome debt problems and stabilize finances.

Jet jewelry is traditionally only worn by one person.
